hesitation

I recently watched a friend bungee jump.

It was an interesting experience, let me tell you the story . .

There was one woman ahead of our friend, so we all stood by on the bridge and watched. This woman was all geared up and ready to go. She stepped out onto the platform and looked down at the rushing river below. Then she made the worst mistake. She hesitated.

From there on in it was a downward spiral of doubt, fear and downright freaking out. You could see the thoughts processing through her mind, then physically manifest in her body. She turned white, tears started rolling down her cheeks. All of the coaxing, cheering and positive talk in the world couldn’t get her to jump. There was no way in hell she was leaping off that bridge. She eventually came back off the platform, it wasn’t her day to jump.

Our friend was up next. I had butterflies in my stomach, what a nerve-wracking build up. But she wasn’t fazed. She didn’t let fear or doubt enter her mind. She knew what she came to do. She had come to jump.

She stepped out onto the platform, took one look down and leaped head first off the bridge with the ease and grace of a diver into a swimming pool.

Her life motto?

hesitation is devastation”

How fitting.

What an incredible display of mind over matter to witness. Watching these two totally opposing experiences. The only difference between them? One person hesitated. One let her mind stray and entertain her negative thoughts. And one stuck to her guns, with an unwavering conviction.

It got me thinking – when have I hesitated and missed out on an incredible experience? When have I psyched myself out of something because of fear?

My fear may not be as obvious as bungee jumping, but perhaps more subtle hesitations around being out of my comfort zone, fear of embarrassment or rejection, fear of failure, or worse – fear of success?

These things may be subtle to the eye, but they have a far more devastating effect on us in the long run.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
― Neale Donald Walsch

What do you hesitate with?

It may seem huge, it may be seem trivial. Your fear is real regardless – but feel the fear and do it anyway! So go book that sky-dive, chat to the cute stranger, apply for your dream job, sign up for that half-marathon, declare your love to someone . . . Whatever it is, just don’t hesitate.

Growth is on the other side of fear.

  1. I agree – Had to reread this post twice 🙂

  2. Hi Joanna – thank you 🙂
Would you like to share your experience with hesitation? Is there something in particular that causes you to go up into your head and psych yourself out?

Well said and very true! Nevertheless, it might be a while until you see me do a bungee jump “with the ease and grace of a diver”. This post also reminded me of that very old saying – “he who hesitates is lost”.

I met with a client today who has fallen to the bottom of the priority list. . It’s a common theme I see with all my clients, as they’re all women. And women give, give, give & then give some more. . To their careers, to their children, to their friends, to their partners, to the community & to their family. . . There are only so many hours in the day, and if YOU are not a priority, there will never be “enough time in the day” for yourself. . Your cup HAS to be full. To be the best version of yourself, to give from abundance, to be a role model for your kids, to do the best job you can. We show up as the worst version of ourselves when our cup is empty. . Scraping from the bottom of the barrel is no way to life your life. It’s surviving, not thriving, and certainly not living. . How can you place more importance on yourself? . After all, health is not just physical - it’s also the quality of your joy, your peace of mind, your inner and outer radiance. Health is how you show up in the world, how you show up for yourself. . You. Come. First 👊🏼
This was my home for the past week. The stunning Salt Water Creek in the Ben Boyd National Park, on the Sapphire Coast, NSW. . A small campground surrounded by an abundance of wildlife only meters from this pristine beach, a fresh water creek, a salt water creek & gorgeous coastal bush walks. . No reception. No toilets. No showers. No emails. No social media. No phone calls. . I truly switched OFF, literally & figuratively. . I realised I hardly took any photos too, which is not like me! Not having my phone on me meant soaking up the moment internally instead of trying to “capture” it with a camera. . There was campfires, star gazing, paddle boarding silently up rivers bird watching, snorkelling, dips in ocean pools, fishing, coastal walks, swims in the lagoon, body surfing and lots of down time to soak it all in. . Wallabies, kangaroos & goannas shared our camp site. Lyrebirds sang to us, black cockatoos screeched, snakes & lizards slithered past. The fish were out of this world snorkelling - I even saw an octopus, baby squids & a giant smooth ray. The animals were such a highlight for me! . I’m feeling so refreshed & so grateful that I got to experience this little gem of a place with my friends. The 7 hour drive was well worth it! . 🌿🌊🌊🌊🌿 #saltwatercreek #sapphirecoastnsw #adventure #backtonature
Literally my heart melts when I read words like these from my clients. 💕. . That’s my purpose & why I do what I do. I’m committed to making lasting, positive change in your world 🙌🏼. . I take my hat off to all the amazing clients that choose to work with me - their vulnerability, openness, courage & commitment to themselves inspires me SO much. . Thank you for allowing me to have the best “job” in the whole world! . #dreamjob #dreamclients #thankful
I actually forgot that yesterday was Valentines Day. . . Being single it was something that slipped my mind (& half the time I don’t know what day it is anyway! 🤣), until I had multiple people remind me of the fact. . I initially got a tinge of sadness, of loneliness, of wishing I had that someone special to share love with in my life. . But then I remembered that true love starts with ME. . Falling in love with myself. Being compassionate to myself. Speaking kindly & gently to myself. Taking care of myself - physically, emotionally & mentally. Showing myself respect. Honouring myself. Living out my truth. Expressing myself uniquely in this world. . So I nourished myself yesterday with nature walks, Pilates, yin yoga, lunch with friends & most importantly - challenging that inner dialogue that was trying to make me feel less than “enough” because of being alone. . For the first time in my life I think I can say I truly do love myself. All the good, bad & the ugly. . I hope you can say the same. 💕
